The Social Work role was set up in March 2004 and the position was renamed Family Support Worker.
The role of the Family Support Worker is to complement the counselling received by individuals or families at the Safer Centre offering users a holistic approach. This is done by supporting the person or the family by ensuring they are fulfilling the requirements of their counselling and identifying any other issues/needs that may be relevant to their healing process that they have not yet identified with their counsellor.
The Family Support Worker assists the family (or individual) to identify their strengths and supports that they already have and assist them to build support networks to aid in their healing process. The role also involves the identification of family (or individual) needs or issues and linking them to the appropriate resources and/or agencies. Advocating for the families to receive the resources and services they require which will enable them to move forward in their lives. The role also involves assisting people to gain the knowledge and skills to be able to work through issues and gain skills to improve their and their families' well being and social functioning
